Ο Μάριος Πανιεράκης σπούδασε Κοινωνιολογία στο Πανεπιστήμιο Αιγαίου και συνέχισε τις μεταπτυχιακές του σπουδές στο Τμήμα Κοινωνικής Ανθρωπολογίας και Ιστορίας του ίδιου Πανεπιστημίου. Εκπόνησε τη διδακτορική του διατριβή με τίτλο: «“Seamos primavera”: Abriendo los muros de las demandas en la lucha por la defensa de Rosa Nera», στο τμήμα Κοινωνιολογίας του Ινστιτούτου Κοινωνικών και Ανθρωπιστικών Επιστημών “Alfonso Vélez Pliego” (Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla, México), η οποία έλαβε τον τιμητικό χαρακτηρισμό Ad Honorem. Κατά την εκπόνηση της διδακτορικής του διατριβής υπήρξε υπότροφος του Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología. Η ερευνητική του εστίαση εντοπίζεται στις συλλογικές δράσεις και στα κοινωνικά κινήματα, σε ζητήματα αγωνιστικής έρευνας και στη σύγχρονη πολιτική θεωρία και φιλοσοφία, ενώ τα τελευταία χρόνια βρίσκει ενδιαφέρον σε ζητήματα πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς. Έχει δημοσιεύσει στην ελληνική, ισπανική και αγγλική γλώσσα, ενώ κείμενά του βρίσκονται και στη γαλλική γλώσσα.
